Case Review: Blinded IRA victim wins £200k compensation for bullying at work

Andrew Bull, 48, a former soldier blinded by an IRA bomb in Northern Ireland in 1983, has been awarded £200,000 in compensation by an employment tribunal after it agreed that he had been bullied at work.

The Cardiff tribunal found against Blaenau Gwent council, and ruled that Mr Bull had been bullied and harassed, and had eventually lost his job at the council as a result of disability discrimination.

An employment tribunal heard that he had been “harassed and victimised” after he failed to join a two-day strike by council workers, and that for a period of two years he suffered “inhumane treatment”.

David Waggett, Chief Executive of Blaenau Gwent council, said in a statement:

“I personally apologised to Mr Bull following the findings of the tribunal that the council did not do enough to support him. The council has a strong track record of supporting people with disabilities. It is therefore very disappointing and a matter of great regret, that in this instance we let down this long-serving member of staff.”

Private Andrew Bull was injured in a Belfast bomb blast in 1983, while serving with the Royal Regiment of Wales.

The employment tribunal awarded him a total of £200,603 in compensation.
