Sexual Discrimination claim settled with solicitor “told to stay single”

A female solicitor who lodged claims for sexual harassment, sexual discrimination and wrongful dismissal, has settled her claims against a West Country firm of solicitors.

Kate Baker, 33, alleged that her employer did not want her to have a relationship or have children and that she was dismissed after she began a relationship.

The Employment Tribunal Judge read her statement which said that her employer had “on many occasions told me that he did not want me in a relationship or to have babies”.

Ms Baker alleged that bullying took place at the firm and that due to her single status she was expected to be free at the weekends to carry out marketing activities for the firm, whereas the married staff were not under such obligations.

Ms Baker also claimed that her employer’s wife had independently sent her a text message reinforcing his wish that she should remain single whilst working for the firm.

In relation to the sexual discrimination settlement, a joint statement issued by Ms Baker and her former employer said “both parties are pleased to confirm that settlement terms have been agreed”.
