There are complex rules which determine what can be claimed for arising from a death, and by whom. Broadly speaking there are three types of claim that can be made:
- A claim on behalf of the estate for financial losses such as funeral expenses and damage to any property (such as a car or a bike or car that was damaged) etc;
- A claim for bereavement compensation can be made by the wife or husband of the deceased, or the parents if the deceased under 18. The amount that can be claimed for bereavement is set by statute and is currently £11,800;
- Finally a claim can be made where the deceased has left people who were financially dependent upon him or her.
